This is a Genuine G-Shot in honor of a legend, retired SFPD Homicide Inspector Napoleon Hendrix passed away on October 20th, 2009 at the age of 78. Insp. Hendrix is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Barbara J. Hendrix, and loving father to; Napoleon Hendrix III, Jacy and Jeffery Hendrix. He leaves behind his 4-adored grandchildren; Kerrie Hendrix-Garica, Corey Hendrix, Jennifer Hendrix and Jessica Hendrix. He is survived by siblings; Gloria Bosley, her husband and Winnie Deloris Brown. Preceded in death by his parents; Napoleon and Erma Hendrix. Napoleon leaves behind many family members and friends and will be dearly missed by. Hendrix graduated from the Univ. of Xavier, served his Country in the U.S. Air Force, at the former Hamilton Air Force Base in Novato, was a former member of the Highway Patrol, and a former Bay Bridge Toll Agent. He graduated with SFPD Academy Class 103b on June 16, 1966, retiring as a Homicide Inspector with the S.F.P.D. after 34 years in 1999. In 1979 Hendrix partnered for 16 years with retired Chief Prentiss (Earl) Sanders. Hendrix, who stood 6'5" distinguished himself not only with his stylish clothes but also his knack for cracking cases. Posing for pictures with then Assistant Chief Sanders, "I'm going to miss you buddy," Sanders said, telling Hendrix well-wishers to shake the hand of a "living legend." In his 21 years with the Homicide, Mr. Hendrix cleared more than 85% of the 500-plus cases he investigated: 187-PC. "He was a guy who could go out there and talk to people, and people talked to him." Even his retirement send-off was delayed several minutes as Hendrix, touted as the Dept.'s most successful homicide cop ever was tied up interviewing a man who insisted that he would spill the beans to Hendrix and no one else. The informant had information about three killings but would talk only to Hendrix. Quoted at his retirement that he's not quite ready to hang up his fedora hats or his size 13 ostrich-skin cowboy boots. There are still some killings he wants to solve after a 21-year career in which he cleared more than 85 percent of his 500-plus murder cases, so plans are in the works for Hendrix to come back to the PD as a consultant or an instructor, and possibly to help oversee a specialized unit of gang and homicide detectives assigned to violent crimes committed blacks against blacks, or with the DA. The Inspector, known around town by two nicknames, "Nap" and "Slim," grew up in Houston's segregated Third Ward. After he graduated from Xavier he served in the United States Air Force. His military service brought him to Hamilton Field in Marin County and he soon settled in Oakland. Mr. Hendrix worked a number of jobs: Park Supervisor, Toll Taker and CHP officer, before joining SFPD in 1965. Soon he became an Inspector, first Narcotics, then Homicide. "If I have to go to Nob Hill in the middle of the night, I'm going to be properly dressed. If I have to knock on doors in the Projects, I am always properly attired. I represent authority when a person has been violently killed." Ret. Dep. Chief. David Robinson, then head of the Homicide, stood on a chair and posed for a comic photo with the 6'5" Hendrix. Robinson said the force needs Hendrix's tenacity and presence: "His experience bridges decades"."To lose that type of skill would be a crime in of itself. He is someone any police professional would want to learn from. In any capacity we can have Hendrix, it would be of great benefit to the community and the Department." Napoleon Hendrix's life was one of service to others and he will always be remembered for this.
