A rendition of the Hearse Song, as it appears in Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz. In the background are various illustrations from that book, drawn by the artist Stephen Gammell (if you like them, we highly recommend you purchase the book!)

This book tops the list of most frequently challenged library books from 1990-2000, as judged by the ALA:

Suck it, Catcher in the Rye!

Happy Halloween!

Song Information:

Title: The Hearse Song
Composer: Anonymous

Lyrics:

Do you ever think, as the hearse goes by
That you may be the next to die?

They wrap you up in a long white sheet
From your head down to your feet

They put you in a big black box
and cover you over with dirt and rocks

And all goes well for about a week
And then the coffin begins to leak

The worms crawl in, the worms crawl out
The worms play pinochle on your snout
They eat your eyes, they eat your nose
They eat the jelly between your toes

A great big worm with rolling eyes
Cralws in your stomach and out your eyes

Your stomach turns a slimy green
And pus pours out like whipping cream

You spread it on a slice of bread
and that's what you eat when you are dead
You spread it on a slice of bread
and that's what you eat when you are dead

  • What does "pinochle" mean? I m italian :)

  • @RBRiky

It's a card game (though I've never actually played it myself).

  • FOrgot to say, the book i have has a isffient cover to that one in the pic, it has a skull coming out of the groudn in front of a house.

  • @Rikku2250

Yeah... the cover art pictured in the video is from the 25th Anniversary edition of the book. I prefer this cover myself - I think it has a much more striking and unsettling feel to it. But I do like the other cover as well, and I believe there's a picture of it somewhere in the video.

  • I have this book, and this is my favourite poem in it, this and "The Slippery-Dee"

Is this you singing? If so i like your accent ^_^

  • @Rikku2250

In response to your other query - yes, that is indeed me singing (and a friend of mine on guitar). And thanks; I appreciate the compliment.
