Thought I'd add a couple of covers, and this is the first one. I'm doing it, in part, because it's a cool song and also because it is, as Townes Van Zandt is reported to have said, one of the songs that a folksinger *has* to know. There are several different versions of the songs (it was originally written in the 1800s) and there was even a version written by Theodore Dreiser. Since he's from Terre Haute, where I was born and went to college, I figured I should add a couple of his verses. Plus, I feel a folksinger should never pass up an opportunity to use the word "Mattoon" in a song. As a music-and-railroad-related aside, I'm told that Mattoon is where Steve Goodman wrote "City of New Orleans." His in-laws lived in Mattoon, which is about 30 miles where I'm from.
Just gave this one another listen to and found I like it just as much as the first time I heard it; hell, make that more! Great job! Great pickin' and singin'. - Mark
