Lilith Performance Studio
Elin Lundgren (SE)
Back in Babys Arms
Performance: 11th of October at 2pm 2008
Gustav Adolfs torg, centre square of Malmö
Participants: 100 women

The aesthetics of resistance. 100 women with 100 different faces showing marks of domestic violence got off a bus in the city centre of Malmö, Sweden. In a silent choreography, the women spread out over the shopping square Gustav Adolfs torg on a Saturday afternoon in October.
Like a mute body the women were placed in-between people going about their weekend shopping. For thirty minutes, they stood completely still looking out in the far distance. Their faces revealed traces of bruises, knife cuts, burn marks, and strangleholds. The constant moving of people suddenly paused. The public space seemed to hold its breath - everything became silent. After a while the people, the audience slowly started move again. They began to notice and comment on the womens faces. Some stepped up extremely close to see if the wounds were for real, and other took pictures of their marks.
In this performance, Lundgren chose action as her artistic method. She created a tableau vivant, a living picture, depicting a dream or a nightmare. The title Back in Babys Arms is taken from a song with the same name by Patsy Cline from 1963.

Elin has her past in the theatre as an actress and director. Her works has always been more related to film, performance and living pictures than a traditional theater. Back in Babys Arms was her first performance in the studio, outside the theatre stage. In works that touches upon alienation, violence and failures Elin accumulates her pieces like living pictures. An absurd raw humor encounters a bare documentary narration. Her intention is obviously political but without pointing out a certain direction. She accentuates the humans exposure and question the common norm of normality.

Elin Lundgren (b. 1973 in Stockholm, Sweden) lives and works in Malmö.
Elin together with Petter Pettersson is the Founder and the Artistic Director of Lilith Performance Studio.
