he award-winning documentary, Coming to Light, tells the dramatic story of the life of Edward S. Curtis, his creation of his monumental work, and his changing views of the people he set out to document. More importantly, the film gives Indian people a voice in the discussion of Curtis images. Hopi, Navajo, Cupig, Blackfeet, Piegan, Suquamish and Kwakiutl people, many of them descended from Curtis's photographic subjects, tell stories about the people in the photographs, and discuss the meaning of the images from their own perspectives.

  • Our ceremonies are not here for your anthropological amusement or to satisfy your curiousness. If you have a genuine spiritual compulsion, then come correctly or don't come at all.

  • if we choose to share our ceremonies it is our decision, not yours. You are an example of why we do not often share our ceremonies. And we do share our ceremonies with white people AT OUR discretion.

  • The lakota word for white people is Wasichu, or "greedy person", one who takes what is not his to take in the first place. My people's word for white people means white devils. Nowhere in any culture across the globe has the white man received a welcoming euphemism.

  • @ProcessedArt IT IS DISRESPECTFUL to share what is not yours to share. If we keep our ceremonies apart, it is because of misguided culture-vultures such as yourself.

  • @ProcessedArt, I'll be dead before I let white people define my indigenous nature! Freakin white devils. Your road to hell is paved with your harmful, "good" intentions. Culture-vultures!

  • @chabochi1, That is a racist statement, and any person who lives with racism in their hearts is not of the Spirit. We are ALL one. And the ceremonies which give honor to the Great Spirit belong to ALL of His creations.

  • @DinoBeeev, It is NOT disrespectful to view, to learn, to share, and spread great knowledge. In fact, that is our duty within our lives. No man has the right to hoard knowledge to himself. If he does, he is a selfish man and not of the Spirit. Do not allow those of limited mind stop you from doing your research.

  • Even with the Native American minds there is this idea that 'man' can own anything. But this is a lie. Man owns nothing. Even the images we see in this video. There is nothing unsacred about sharing the beauty of the respect and honor to the Great Spirit. In fact, it is our duty to share with the world ALL that is Beauty and ALL that is Love. The Native blood runs through my veins and I say fervently that all are invited to view, participate, and enjoy the majesty of the awakening Spirit.

  • DinoBeeev I can tell you something..My friend did a report on the BlackFoot and said there song "Sundance" is a bad dance. She said there was a part when "A woman skins a man" I don't think thats true :O teatonaz don't bow to earth, sky, water, wind, and fire.. o.o

  • this is HORRIBLE for this to be on you tube, let alone to be filmed!
