The end-of-year Christmas season is typically the busiest time for US retailers. But with the economy still on shaky ground, businesses fear consumers will tighten their belts and cut back on spending. As Al Jazeera's Patty Culhane reports, this year's holiday shopping has got off to a slow start.

  • I stopped celebrating xmas when I realized it wasn't about any organic appreciation of Jesus or the season, rather a glutinous gorging on material, food, and black ink. This year I will be spending xmas at a homeless shelter, serving food and listening to the hungry and downtrodden. In my mind, that's the true spirit of Jesus.

  • Well said.

  • i love shopping

  • In what experts are calling "fucking DUH" People are Spending less. >.>

  • The bottom line is that the CEOs of all these big chains see us as nothing more than dollar $ign$. If possible, DO NOT make them richer and give them a reason to laugh their asses off at us again for ANOTHER Shopmas season...I mean Christmas.

  • What I bought on Black Friday: 10 cans of low-sodium canned soup

It was probably the biggest purchase I've made all year.

  • Boxing Day is way better!

  • I guess that's the kind of stuff a true christian should be doing, well done!

  • If the trickle downers would spend more instead of hoarding maybe the money would be returning to them. Oh wait piss on the economy doesn't work wow suprise suprise not.

  • Let's look into this. When an individual gets into a personal financial crisis, do they say "Gee. I have to spend more money to help get me out of this."? What a sham. This economy is a total farce. When stocks are priced in gold, real money, we've been in decline for over 10 years now. This financial system is so phony. It's too bad that many people think that it's normal to live like this. Let's get back to a real, productive economy and, even more important, the true meaning of Christmas.

  • lol i shore they care
