A native Floridian builds an igloo on the banks of the Speed River in Guelph, Ontario. Inspired by the 1922 movie Nanook of the North, this igloo could not be made by cutting snow blocks out of native packed snow, but instead had to be made from molded snow blocks, a lengthy process.

The construction started with concentric rings, but had to be converted to a spiral format (see the work on Dec 22) to allow the upper blocks to set correctly without artificial aid. The hemisphere had an exact 5 foot radius (10 foot diameter), and was quite roomy on the inside.

  • Hello, I am the builder of the igloo in the movie. The key to the blocks sticking together, even when they are nearly horizontal, is the SPIRAL. Note that on Dec 21 and Dec 22, I converted from concentric rings to the spiral form.

    Why the spiral?

Because you always have a "neighbor" block that provides friction & something to lean against. If you build with concentric rings, the first block on a new ring is just hanging there all by itself, and cannot support itself.

  • Don't forget the door...

  • Great!

    Cheers from south of Brazil.

We don't have that much of snow (as a fact, only a little every year or two) but thanks for sharing this.

  • I think they say stuck with the neighbour block.

Do you need building permits to construct igloos in Canada?

  • ENT-Looks like fun and right-up your alley.

  • How did they stay stuck on sideways? I didn't see them supported in any way.
