@milekd Now that I did the valve adjustment, I no longer hear that noise. Two of my valves were way out of spec. Do let me know what you find out, however. I'm probably going to take my valve cover off again to make sure I don't have any loose VANOS bolts.

Hi,
Saw your videos about the engine knocking/ticking noises. I also have it on my car, a 2003 BMW 330xi. How serious is this problem, or is it just a question of adjusting the valves?
Grateful for any advice you can provide from your experience!
Cheers

@sdemetriou The valve adjustment did quiet down the engine quite a bit, but it does have a natural tick to it from the injectors. If you want to be sure where the ticking is coming from, get yourself an auto stethoscope and put it up on the injector rail/etc. All my ticking is coming from the injector rails. Hope this helps.

@doomlord82 many thanks - was this in any way related to the VANOS?

@sdemetriou Not in the slightest. If you're worried about the VANOS, I would suggest checking it whenever you do your valve adjustment.

My 1998 E36 M3 Evo makes that noise. It recently had an Inspection II service (including tappets / vale adjustment). 2K miles later I have that noise and the VANOS has started to rattle too. The car is going into BMW Friday next week for a diagnostic. Will let you know. I'm at 64K miles. Had a new waterpump at recent Inspection II also.

@milekd I posted a followup video where my valves are adjusted if you're interested in checking out.
