I was surprized to see this video/song. Never knew of it & I'm listening to it right now while making a comment. It's one of those novelty songs that didn't make it to the Vancouver Cda radio stations or I should of heard it. I was listening to R&R at the time this was a heard somewhere else and I do remember The Purple People Eater, Itsy Bitsy Bikini, Abdul's Party along with those Green & Purple Pills(all hits at the time) but no Black Cat, so "James James Hold the Ladder Steady"
Even as far back as the Early 50's, Ferlin Husky played lead guitar (as well as Owens) on Tommy's early recordings. You're right in your info too! Good pointing that out!
On Youtube you can read comments about Buck Owens playing guitar on Tommy Collins' "Black Cat" from 1960. Since it is fairly well known that Owens did play guitar on Collins' earliest Capitol recordings, this is a common mistake, thinking all that Collins recorded back then had Owens on lead guitar. By the summer of 1957, Owens was seldom if ever used on Collins' recordings. "Black Cat" utilized Billy Strange and Roy Nichols.
@stilldough I would if I knew how we have all his old records .

Couldn't be . He was already out with a hit of his own .

Yep, Buck Owen's guitar work (almost sounding like one guitar playing bass & the other playing melody), was just awesome on that!
