Scott Shipman, Senior Privacy Counsel, eBay is asked a question by Christopher Soghoian regarding requests by governments for access to private Skype communications (which are in theory encrypted). This is an excerpt from the Reforming Internet Privacy Law event held at the University of Colorado on December 4, 2009.
Skype uses proprietary code. Since we can't inspect the code, it is not possible to verify any claim that skype does or does not have a backdoor or whether. This is why I always prefer open-source off-the-record open-source messenger services. Remember: trust, but verify.
