On Sunday, February 7th, activists in New York City continue the campaign against the cruel abuse of horses in New York City's carriage horse industries.

Shamrock Stables, West Side Livery, Ian McKeever, Frank and the rest of the dirty animal abusers are now on the chopping block, as this group of activists is determined to put their industry out of business.

Horses are kept in nose-to-tailpipe conditions for 9 hours a day, up to 7 days a week, hauling brutally heavy loads including carriage and passengers around the streets of New York City. They inhale carbon monoxide for most of their "work" day, and routinely find their water sources empty.

Horses are worked in the blistering sun and the freezing cold. In snow, and ice, they haul happy and blissfully ignorant tourists on stupid joyrides.

Horses are easily spooked by loud noises and sudden movements, and have often spooked and bolted, causing automobile accidents, injury to humans, and injury - often fatal to the horses. Can you think of a city more loud, or with more sudden movements than New York City?

Horses need to fully lay down in order to sleep properly - but New York City horses are warehoused in multi-story buildings without adequate ventilation (ammonia buildup from urine in these places causes health problems and provides an agonizing breathing experience), any fire safety measures, and often times stalls too small to lay down properly, or at all.

No, the horses do not live in Central Park. They live in a prison.

Horse Carriage drivers will tell passengers that the industry is humane and the horses are treated well, and the industry has oversight by the ASPCA. The ASPCA rarely provides any oversight at all, and are never to be found when their cruelty hotline is called to report carriage horse cruelty or violations regarding their access to water, working with obvious injuries, the weather conditions they're being forced to work in, etc etc.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Please do not believe the drivers' lies. They are lying to you because their industry, and thus their money, is being threatened,

Please just try and stick with general lines like 'there is no excuse for animal abuse' and other general lines about the horse drawn cruelty issues as most people need to be educated and not alienated. Stick with general lines about the cruelty and you'll be far more effective - good luck!
