http://IRockJazz.com IRockJazz caught Russell Malone recently in Chicago, where he discussed why Jazz is not gaining popularity, and how important it is to play for the audience, and engage them, and not perform for the critics who prefer the Out for Out's sake.

  • you dont need the apostrophe in "its"

  • Thanks Russell, tremendous interviews and wisdom

  • Great points by this titan of Jazz. One of the problems is that many young, talented musicians, are drawn to Jazz because they are under the mistaken impression it is a completely intellectual music with no boundaries on how a given artist may express themselves. They are attracted to its difficulty, and use the music as a medium for challenging themselves and others, but Jazz really isn't that. Jazz is a style, not a laboratory for analysis, experimentation and self-conscious "innovation."

  • nothing wrong with being a great player AND selling records at the same time!!

  • Young black musicians interested in connecting with people have gone into "gospel" music and/or ditched jazz altogether which has become academic and requires proving yourself in an institution to the "masters" before you have a career . The critics and jazz promoters look down on "fusion" music or similar crossover type of music that might appeal to people . Jazz musicians these days rarely play current pop tunes like cannonball used to . The end result is an academic music .

  • Right on Russell!

  • This is great to see...another timely treat.
