@pcfxer I love that sound as well, which is why I was considering an Si for a while. But I just saw a video on a Spec with just i/h and the changeover was awesome, can't find the video, it's buried in there somewhere
If you want to save some money and go faster i suggest getting a B13 and doing a SR20VE swap, And if you like the "crossover" sounds, Nissan's VVL owns them all. Its the loudest cam switch you will ever hear.
And if you build it anything like mine, i make 184whp @ 2180lbs, rev to 8K rpm with both intake and exhaust cams switching at 4700, all with just bolt ons, and a jwt ecu. And it runs mid 13 second 1/4's. Now my B13 is VERY VERY clean. Cant beat a new car though, i admit.
heh, I meant "power valves" which was the intake runner adjustment.
IMO, I love the "changeover" sounds that engines with VVTL-i, VTEC/i-Vtec (performance), old QR, etc make. I mean, not having the sound could mean better tuning (more area under curve and smoother power band), but hearing things "kick-in" is so cool that it becomes addicting.
Thanks for the info on the new QRs, we'll see what I end up with in about year ;).
Actually, it was never the valves which made the noise on the old Spec Vs. It used to switch to a different intake runner while crossing 5000rpm. The new ones don't do that but you can hear a discernible change after 5000rpm anyways (most noticible right after this video starts while still in first gear.) The CVVTCS technology of this engine means the powerband is a bit different every time you push down the gas due to tiny adjustments in timing.
I think it has more to do with the tuning of the valvetrain...cams are tuned higher so there is probably longer duration and more lift and when the valves engage there is less likely to be a large (and AWESOME) sound change ;). THat's my theory.
