The M18A1 Claymore is a directional anti-personnel mine used by the U.S. military. It was named after the large Scottish sword by its inventor, Norman A. MacLeod. The Claymore fires shrapnel, in the form of steel balls, out to about 100 meters across a 60° arc in front of the device. It is used primarily in ambushes and as an anti-infiltration device against enemy infantry. It is also of some use against soft-skinned vehicles.

  • Set up many Claymores while on patrol on the Korea DMZ. Common to place a sandbag over ignitor when checking. While uncommon, it was possible for the fuse to fire during testing. I'll never forget the ass chewing I got one afternoon before a night ambush when I was checking out a Claymore. I casually dropped a sandbag onto the fuse instead of placing it gently on top of the fuse and my Squadleader had a shit fit. When you handle explosives regularly, it's easy to get complacent. =)
