Very strange ritual... Why reenact a hanging? Whats the point?

The Kutztown Folk Festival has reenactments of much of Pennsylvania history that helped shape America. The hanging of Susanna Cox was hugely significant in its effect, yet the lady was almost lost to history. The Pennsylvania Dutch were responsible for many of the things we take for granted. For instance, the “Kentucky Longrifle”, was originally called the “Lancaster Rifle”, but Daniel Boone, born in Berks County, Pennsylvania, took it to Kentucky and made it famous.

This reenactment is important because Susanna Cox’s hanging was directly responsible for the American Legal Appeals System as we now know it. The consequences of her unjust hanging were huge: because of it, we now have Clemency and Courts of Appeal. When she was hung in the 18th century, America was still practicing English Common Law, and appeals were not possible. The outrage over her hanging caused the PA State Legislature to enact an appeals process.

She died of boredom before they could hang her.

@awagner615 she did do it, she admitted it to her priest
It is also an important historical event to understand how they went about things that long ago. Someone said that she admitted to doing it. Now in this day and age if someone made that same admission under the same circumstances it would be tossed out because of intimidation and coaching. The "evidence" of the baby being murdered vs still born as she said was based on poorly trained "experts" and that would never have happened that way in 2010.
