This traditional Malay wedding was staged during the 6th International Nite 2008 (University of East Anglia). The main items in this ceremony are:
- Silat buka gelanggang: The so-called 'warrior dance' has its own significance: to get rid off the evil spirit, so that the groom and bride will be protected from bad influence/luck.
- Dulang hantaran: The exchange of gifts -- from both sides of the two newly united families. This symbolises the act of endorsing the 'union' of both families (not only the groom-bride).
- Bersanding: The groom and bride, touted as the 'King and Queen of the Day', are given a royal treatment -- paraded with colourful 'bunga manggar' (palm blossom) and to the grand-and-loud beatings of 'kompang' (a kind of mini handy drum). And they would be sitting on their very 'own throne' for (typically) a good one hour.
- Tepung tawar or merenjis: A unique traditional way for the parents and wedding guests to offer their blessings. The scattered confetti normally represents the three significant aspects of life: food (rice), air (pandan leaves), and water (the 'air mawar').
- Bunga telur: It literally means 'egg-flower': i.e. a real edible hard-boiled egg attached to an artificial flower deco (normally in a form of 'stalk flower'). The egg-flower serves as a token of appreciation for those who take part in the 'tepung tawar'. The 'egg' is used here as a metaphor of fertility.
Although some rituals have been simplified (or modified) to accommodate the time/space constraints -- all the main elements are well preserved. This special traditional ceremony is the first of its kind to be staged in Norwich. It was exclusively presented by the small number of (but very proud) Malaysian community in Norwich.
