What a cool looking band, love this photo. Great band of course too.

Well, I was about to say that Ray Charles wrote it, but then I checked, and it looks like the earliest version was done by Walter Davis in 1940 - earlier than Lightnin' Hopkin's 1947 recording - and who knows, maybe Davis heard it from someone else... Anyway, if you're interested in hearing other versions, I'd recommend both Hopkin's and Charles' recordings, and if you fancy something a bit more upbeat try Aretha's Franklin's version. Thanks for posing this one.

I think the version at Woodstock(?) was really good. Heaviest JA ever sounded. But this version is very very good because you can really feel the emotion.

You got that right! Absolutely brilliant! Very powerful and full of energy!! Airplane rules!

The best live version that I've heard!

the original is actually a lightnin' hopkins song, but the lyrics were messed around a little :)

This was an Airplane song before Hot Tuna existed. They played it at many of their live shows. They recorded a studio version right around the time of Surrealistic Pillow.
My friend showed up with an armload of Hot Tuna records and a few tabs, wow, never forget that day over 30 years ago
