they used to use 2 mics taped together like that to do some noise cancellation of everything but the voice.

I was judging a world title boxing match in Atlantic City, over 20 years ago. When it came to the singing of the Star Spangled Banner, it was David Clayton Thomas doing the honors. What a great thrill for me.
