I just know the gi version works really well. It is a misdirection sweep. You hip in one way so he has to rebalance himself the other way, then you do this sweep.
The guy he is sweeping is so high up and appears to not balance very well. This sweep probably only works if someone is mostly off balance already and up high on their knees. The problem i see with this sweep is if they are in such a bad position there are other, better, more effective sweeps that you can do. I think he worries too much about keeping his guard closed. In such an easy sweeping position you shouldn't sweat opening your legs.
Sorry Bro , but I don't think this will ever work. You must get a better angle, turn your rip almost perpendicular to your opponent's body - than reach for the grip on his leg - secure it and apply pressure with your leg so you get levarage to sweep controling his arm. You can't just pull his ankle and hope he doesn't extend his leg to defend. Plus you're off balance when you roll... don't take this personally but you said you teach? Are you a BJJ practitioner?
he doesn't underhook the thigh hes goes low on the shin near the ankle, if you were to hook under the thigh you'd usualy be setting up for an arm bar or a helicoptor sweep
I don't know, I kind of like it. I will give it a shot maybe pull it off sometime someday who knows. But I dig not underhooking inside the thigh area which can be a no no in MMA due to getting your arm caught and down comes to punches.
