For a while I couldn't listen to Elliott Smith anymore because I listened to him religiously at a very dark time in my life. I associated most of his songs with negativity, and saw his songs as validation of the things I was going through. But now going back through his songs, I see them in a much more positive light. I see his songs as liberation from negativity and acceptance among others things. I think good music grows and changes with you.

I'm at a dark time in my life (meth addiction), and Elliott is 90% of what I listen to. For me, emotional or sad songs (for lack of better term) make me happy even during dark times. Couldn't do it w/o him. I wanna end it and I'm reaching a breaking point, but I don't want to part with his music, it's the only thing in my life worth living for. But it won't save me forever. My 2 best friends: One is killing me, and the other, Elliott, is saving me. Love you, miss you, see you on Division Day.

You sound like a very intelligent person, I'm sorry to hear about your addiction. A word of advice from a manic depressive, don't kill yourself. It WILL get better. Move to another country, the change will make you rethink your life and get you away from your dealer.
