I believe this regiment is carved out of the southern Kingdom Travancore army's famed Nair Brigade by Indian government after Independence - and this kingdom and Nair Brigade possess the distinguished privilege of defeating a European Naval force in entire Asia in the Battle of Colachel, where the kingdom of Travancore fought against the Dutch East India Company, during the Travancore-Dutch War. The Dutch never recovered from the defeat and this war lead to the decline of Dutch power in India.

historically, one of the greatest and bravest regiments.. the regiment hasn't grown much compared to others post independence because the land-based strategic threats are mostly from the North.

I am very very happy to be with this VEER SOLIDERS........ My dad served in 8 MADRAS REGIMENT and he served for this country.
