I'll admit - much of our claim in the Christmas sermons - is a matter of faith. Although the retail economy shrank by 6% and Christmas sales in big boxes did not expand, the statistics are not really the bottom-line for us. "A new economy is arising!" is based on the thousands of emails and blogs and people stopping us on the street: Stories of radically altered non-product Christmases, substituting shared experience for buying things, and responding to local artisans for gifts.
Here is a talk by our teacher Stacy Mitchell, author of "Big Box Swindle." http://www.newrules.org/retail/article/new-deal-local-economies
Here is a national survey on holiday sales from the Institute for Local Self-Reliance. Last year - more people shopped at independents stores. There is a real movement from chains and big boxes over to local economies. Local-lujah!

Hey, Mainstream Media,
This is what fiscal conservatism looks like!
Thank you Rev. Billy. You remind me of another "voice in the wilderness" I read about.

I am a proud member of the stop shopping congregation, I walk into walmart, I am a hostage, there isnt much else in our town, as in many, but I just buy food there, my clothes are usually second hand and they fit, usually cost little or nothing. and sing I hate walmart, folks think I'm crazy but what the hell
