@wafrederick The only way it happens is if you apply power or ground to the circuit when you're not suppose to. If you use it as intended it's perfectly fine. I've used one version or another of a PP since 2001 and I haven't smoked any computers or modules. I have fixed thousands of cars more effectively though and put more money in my pocket.
All CAN systems have inline resistors. Did your instructor mention it? It's part of the systems comprehensive component monitor.
@Northropfam I have been told of computers smoked using a power probe including test lights.I went to a class on can systems and the instructor did replace a computer because someone used a powerprobe.Only a low resistance dvom is only used.
Matco doesn't do anything except re-label PP's product and increase the price. I doubt highly these two in the video could use the tool if their lives depended on it either.
CAN systems have resistors inline on the data lines. Most of the time they "open" when data lines are shorted and can be repaired without replacing a module/s.
Can do damage to CAN computer systems, never use this on the CAN Line or else called damage.Smokes 4 or 5 computers which is expensive. My dealer was very disappointed,Courtney was not at the tool expo this year including the powerblock hosts.
@north49gear He never uses the power probe for this reason.

@wafrederick maybe your instructor should learn how to use the tool properly. this tool cuts diagnosing of electrical components down tenfold.

Instructor said not to mess with 2 wires twisted together.Basically the pp is a gun shooting 12 volts to a 5 volt sensor.
