"As long as there is gravity and we're walking upright, we're at risk for back pain." 90% of us will experience back pain at some point in our lives. For years, people had to just live with the pain. There are many treatments available now. Some, like lumbar steroid injections, can be done very quickly and offer almost immediate pain relief.
People living with degenerative disc disease or spinal stenosis can often benefit from steroids injected directly into the epidural space.
The procedure is done quickly and relatively painlessly. Doctors administering the shot are guided by x-ray.
"We can get the medicine right where it needs to be," said Dr. Jim Smith, radiologist at Bellevue Medical Center.
Patients can sometimes go home within 30 minutes.
