The Beatles were also not schitzophrenic to start with, (which Wilson may have been) and besides, you can't say drugs didn't hurt John Lennon, who basicly gave up unless forced by Paul to work. John didn't do much after about 1967. His solo work certainly was not up to his previous standards. Plus, The Beatles had george Martin. Wilson was pretty much alone as songwriter, arranger and producer. I LOVE the Beatles, but I consider Wilson at least an equal.

Never listened to Gershwin Music. I love the album. Brian Wilson is a genius. Saw him at Wolf Trappe Center for Performing Arts, did the entire album then his Beach Boy stuff.

Lennon pretty much gabe up on the beatles, only working if McCartney dregged him into the studio. He says so himself in several interviews. True, SOME of his solo stuff was good, but "Two Virgins" and "Life With the Lions" were just wastes of good vinyl. I put Wilson up there with the Beatles as well, and he didn't need Geroge Mrting. He had everything he needed exceot moral support for his music from those he wanted it from most.

I think you're being a little unfair to Lennon; I personally view his solo work quite favourably when stacked alongside McCartney's (more depth to his songs and a better lyricist). It's true, though, that Brian Wilson gets unfairly blamed for the beach boys' failings. Give him a George Martin and Abbey Road and who knows what he could have accomplished artistically. I put him with Lennon and McCartney (or McCartney and Lennon) on my Rock Mount Rushmore.

Marvelous! Part of true genius is to be able to recognize true genius, and Wilson, in my estimation, is a true genius.

Although what you say about the Beatles themselves makes a lot of sense, perhaps you have not listened to what the Beach Boys were doing from 1969 to 1973. Have you heard "Feel Flows" for instance??

    2. Gershwins were from a different musical vocabulary of an earlier decade; it's not about who's better or best: they respect eachother cross-generationally.

Paul McCartney, who couldn't really read music could nevertheless compose it: hit songs one after one, with and wihtout John Lennon. But, it was a differenent song form than B'way play themes and Jazz. Another good LP is Glen Frey, of the Eagles; he's too gone and, honoroured some of his fav old music he heard his dad play. Stop fighting!

Brian Wilson is the vocal-pop rock genius of the 1960's pop-music world. I didn't know about this LP project until today but, I am so glad I found it today,I might not swear in my posts at all, today.

Everyone knew it back then: The Beatles, The Who, The Seekers, The Kinks, on and on. Peter, Paul & Mary were known for their folk vocal trio arr's. Later, CSN&Young came with very fancy stuff but, abit later...and different.

Who of you critics produced anything like God only knows on Pet Sounds?
