  • Did you have any driver or installation problems?

I just ordered the S12 today, and am planning to install Ubuntu on it.

  • @mele1408 . Hi mele1408. One thing you will need to do is change the SATA disk mode from enhanced to compatibility. Without that change disk access is very slow. Everything else works.

Not really what I asked, but ok. So I can keep the Windows XP recovery partition?

  • @mele1408

    Hi Mele1408,

No you don't need to re-install Windows, just the Ubuntu partition.

  • Hi LinuxEmporium.

    Thanks for your answer.

So you'd recommend me, that I wipe the ENTIRE HDD, including the Windows XP recovery partition (No CD/DVD included)? I'd prefer not having to delete the recovery partition as well, as it might prove useful at some point in the future.

I guess it might be possible to take a full backup of that partition and have it laying on another machine?

  • Hi Mele1408,

We found that it was really important to set the compatibility mode before doing the install. I know it might be a pain to reinstall at this stage, but you should find performance improves if you wipe the disk and start from scratch. Obviously you will need to back up any files you want to keep beforehand.

  • I tried changing the disk mode to compatibility, although I didn't notice much of a difference.

One thing I've noticed is, that the load cycle count of the HDD goes up amazingly fast (about 1 per minute), both in enhanced and compatibility mode.

  • Also, booting takes a really long time. It just hangs at the Ubuntu logo for a couple of minutes. I read that passing "nosplash" to the kernel will solve this. Perhaps this is also just a matter of changing the disk mode.

  • Hi.

Thanks for your reply. I just received the S12 today, and have just finished installing Ubuntu on it.

Wireless doesn't work at the moment, but it should be easy to fix.

It seems that the system locks up every minute or so, but continues right away once you move the cursor. This is definitely a problem, especially when it comes to installing a lot of updates/copying large amount of files. Maybe changing the disk mode from enhanced to compatible will solve this.
