PRECIOUS

Precious is a darling female Cockapoo who weighs in at 15 pounds and is approximately nine years old. We found her at a local animal control where she was surrendered by her previous owners and we simply could not leave her there.

Obviously, they had not taken care of Precious in a long time. Her toenails were curving under her paws and she had almost no hair on the back part of her body or legs. The skin in those areas is leathery, thick and all wrinkled due to a longstanding infection. To make things worse, she has mammary tumors. As if all of that is not enough, her entire mouth is in terrible shape - her gums are badly infected and receded, the roots of many of her teeth are exposed and she has severe tartar on many of her teeth.

Precious does not feel sorry for herself, because she will dance on her back legs for attention and is extremely affectionate and outgoing. She sat patiently while we cut her long nails and soaked her irritated skin in medicated solution. Precious is looking for a place to retire and enjoy the life she deserves. She still has a lot of sugar in her to share!

Foster Update 2/13/11: I brought Precious home with me last night so that she would have a calm environment where she could recover. Poor Precious has such a severe infection in her legs and feet that every step she takes is painful. She walks very gingerly and only does so for necessary things - such as to go potty or to walk to the food bowl.

Precious slept calmly and quietly in bed with me last night without any need to get up to go potty. Today, she spent about an hour sleeping on a plush dog bed soaking up the warm sunshine!

As Precious heals, I truly believe that a beautiful and spry spirit will be revealed. She has already gained a twinkle in her eye that was not apparent even yesterday. Time will allow this girl to shine and become the amazing lap dog that she deserves to be!

Update 2/18/11: Precious visited Dr. Ewing at Collier Animal Hospital this week for a thorough check-up, blood work, x-rays and urinalysis. The x-rays showed a perfectly clear chest, which is great news. They also showed some signs of arthritis in her spine; however, Dr. Ewing feels positive that simple food supplements will make Precious feel much more comfortable. The urinalysis looked good and the blood work showed just what was expected in a dog fighting such severe skin infections.

Precious is showing signs of feeling much better! She does not walk nearly as gingerly as she did just one week ago. Because of her rapid improvement, we are hopeful that Precious will be able to undergo her spay surgery, dental cleaning and extractions, and a biopsy of the mammary growths within the next two to three weeks.

Update 3/11/11: Precious successfully completed surgery on 3/9/11 to have her mammary tumors removed. She has one large incision and two smaller incisions. Thanks to Paces Ferry Veterinary Clinic!

Precious was a little under the weather yesterday, but today she is feeling fine and dandy. She isn't tiptoeing on tender feet anymore - looks like I'm going to have to work to keep her calm until she heals from the incisions!

Update 3/16/11: The results are in for Precious' mammary tumors. They are benign! Now, all she needs is a dental and then she will be ready to find her forever home. Precious is doing very well. She is extremely loving and playful, and she loves to go for walks. Precious has proven to be an amazingly resilient and hopeful girl.
