A Sri Lankan journalist killed on Jan. 8 will posthumously be awarded the 2009 World Press Freedom Prize, UNESCO said Monday.
Lasantha Wickrematunge, founder and editor of the Sunday Leader, had written his own obituary, saying he was committed to press freedom despite the risk to his life.
Wickrematunge started the Sunday Leader with his brother in 1994 and was outspoken in his opposition to the war between Sri Lanka's government and the Tamil separatist group, the Liberation Tigers.

Didn't know your uncle was Sinhalese to begin with! Anyhow Lasantha didn't do progressive politics irrespective or party politics.
He was trying his best to mudsling the SLFP-the government while white painting the UNP and their henchmen therefore he was a henchman.
Had Lasantha been openly critical on how the youths were killed in the late 80s and early 90s under the UNP regime, I would have some respect for Lasantha but he did not.
Thats the truth which I stand for.

You say henchman, my uncle was unbowed to no man, but yet you say he was never honest, how come he was never brought to justice for false news, cause they had nothing. You must be a daily news guy, gov paper. Man there are way to of you on here, with comments with no back. Man before you wrote this you should have said I have no idea what I am taking about.

Though he is dead truth must be told that Lasantha represented the capitalistic chauvinistic hollow journalism than any progressive exemplary creativity in his work.
Had he been honest in his writings than being a henchman of a fickle political party he would have still been alive.
