Prelude No. 16 in B-flat minor from Twenty-Four Preludes Op. 41

Lera Auerbach (b. 1973) is an acclaimed Russian poet, pianist, and composer. She was a child prodigy, performing as a soloist as early as eight years old and even composed an opera at twelve. Although she was born in Russia, she emigrated to the United States and studied piano and composition (with Milton Babbitt) at Julliard. She is a prolific composer and her musical language is characterized by a mixture of tonal and atonal writing. Her music straddles both romanticism and modernism, and is influenced by Scriabin, Shostakovich, and Schnittke. While many of her works have not been recorded, those that have reveal her penchant for creating a decidedly grim, melancholy, and pessimistic sound world.

  • So if it's not "experimental music" it's crap? And any conservative composer is automatically worthless to your mind? Bach, Mendelssohn, Grieg, and Rachmaninov didn't go "forward." Are they stupid?

  • I'm surprised you think Grieg and Rachmaninov were "very experimental." To me they were die-hard conservatives who looked to the past. We could just as easily say they copied Liszt and Chopin, and covered their tracks with chromaticism.

I don't think you've heard enough of Auerbach's music if you think she sounds like Chopin, and comparing her to Clayderman is absurd. Her music is closer to Schnittke than anything else.

  • Ocean etude much?

  • Who are you to judge what is to move "forward" or to move "backward"? Who have such a power to decide that?

  • I liked the piece.

  • Well, I agree that it is conservative in the sense that it is an old style, but it it still well done and appealing to me. And I'm not generally conservative in my taste in music, but I can't complain about this. It's probably best not to be too dogmatic or cerebral in our reactions to music.

  • I am absolutely speechless. For a modern composer like Lera Auerbach, this is more than anybody could ask! Bravíssima!

  • i literally have no words for how CONSERVATIVE this is.

  • tTo my ears, very much inspired by chopin's c minor etude op. 25/12

  • definitely schumannisque.

  • @Hexameron Where can i get sheet music for this piece?
