The crackling of the fire indicates it is wood-burning. The De Havilland Comet in an earlier scene indicates this must be 1953 or later ie after the introduciton of the Clean Air Act which banned smoking fires !

@akapushkin Books! Not to mention radio and actual conversation with people! And theatre and music. Sometimes I think we're rather more dull for revolving mostly around tv and the Internet.

@johnster1964 Well, if we're going to be technical, the film depicts a time BEFORE 1956 (Clean Air Act) and AFTER 1958 (round windows on a Comet). How clever of the filmmakers to warp time like that. :)
