Q: If I inherit money, is my spouse entitled to a percentage of my inheritance?

A: As long as you keep that money separate and apart, no. By separate and apart, I mean it is placed into a different bank account, in your name alone, not a marital bank account, not a joint bank account, a bank account in your name alone. As long as it is kept in that bank account and not co-mingled (I'll explain that) then it is going to be yours. By co-mingling, it is a legal term which means basically to mix up the monies, to share it with your spouse. That could be simply using it for marital expenses. It could be just putting it into the joint bank account. It could even be buying a property in joint names with that money. As long as that money therefore is not co-mingled when it comes time for it to be distributed, it will be yours and yours alone.
