  • Randomly picked this gem out in the philosophy section at the local Barnes and Noble and fell in love with its simple philosophy on life. I particularly love his call for a seperation between a society and culture. To be a full part of society is to play by previously set rules and social scripts; to live within human culture is to become part of something that is ultimately always changing, expanding, and broadening its horizons. When these two are intertwined, art can be used for control

  • @Hotsauce850 Absolutely. If we use them consciously, though, we can choose to live in societies we create and destroy as we live through our culture. One of my favorite themes in this book is that finite games aren't evil or bad for us, we just need to understand what they are and what they're good for.

  • I have! And it's really, really good. He keeps building on earlier ideas, and constructs a fascinating lens for viewing just about anything in life.

I finished it about a month ago, but I'm slowing understanding it more each day as I live my life. Most recently, I've become fascinated by the split between the theatrical and the dramatic, between moving and touching, between (as a teacher recently put it) the performer and the shaman. The performer performs for an audience.

  • Hey, Peter.

Have you finished this book yet?

It's pretty much my bible and I'm pretty much its evangelist.

It's one of my finite games, I guess.

Anyways, that's a pretty good summary of the book's abstract, so thank you for that.

    Any chance of a follow-up?

  • @badarts Honestly, I haven't. It's just sitting there, waiting me for to pick it back up. I think I had to put it down for a while to digest the beginning.

But, just because you reminded me, I'm going to get back to it. Thanks!
