  • Is it a tradition in Japan for the civilians to salute to each other? Shinkansen is not military and it's not government owned. I understand bowing is a way for the Japanese to show respect, but saluting is a European influence which is used mostly in the military only.

  • @kes1963

I live in California and I totally agree. To many NIMBYs (Not in my back yard) for it to work. The US is now the land of Fuck YOU I've got mine and I could care less about you. How sad..................but hey, this is the greatest place on earth. Just ask the 1 percent.

  • @toybuilder Was curious about the pointing myself. Actually it is an intentional gesture that all Shinkansen operators are trained for. By pointing at an object or indicator, and calling out what is being observed or confirmed, the operator mentally double checks themselves. The final pointing (not the salute) at 1:20 is confirming that the train has departed the station and is clear of the platform. You can also hear the operator calling out speed signals (e.g. SIGNARU-SAN-JUU = signal 30 km)

  • @toybuilder Thnx a lot :-D

  • @DJB747 Japanese culture is steeped in tradition and rituals. The salute as the end of the train approaches him is a farewell salute to the train while the train is in his presence. Then a few seconds later, he turns to the departed train and points at it - another gesture to indicate that the train travels well. You see similar rituals at the airport - the ground crew will "send off" each and every air plane.

  • 500系はアイドルですね~

    あまりの存在感に、外人さんビビッてます!

    初めて500系の実物を見たときの感動を思い出しました。

    普遍的なかっこよさがあると思います。

    ありがとうございました。

  • @pebbIe5 I agree. It would be nice if North American cities (Toronto where I am from) performed their duties the same way.

  • So professional and efficient.

  • What is the meaning of the gesture at 1:19?

I mean the one where he kind of points at the train, not the salute thingy. (Please also tell me if the "salute" means something different than "hi", I'd like to know just for the heck of it :P )
