This song was recorded at Barb Barton's Turtle Dove CD Release Concert in January of 2010 at the UU Church in East Lansing, MI. It was her encore performance. Barb was a resident artist on Isle Royale National Park in 1992, the year she left Michigan to take a job as an endangered species biologist in Pennsylvania with The Nature Conservancy. She wrote this song (originally titled "Letter to Joshua") to her nephew Joshua King as a letter of goodbye, asking him to take care of her beloved land. It is a song cherished by those who have lived in Michigan, and is her most requested song. There is a grassroots movement to make it Michigan's state song.
This song was originally recorded on "From the Eye of Hawk", with Kitty Donohoe and Asta Jurgutis on background vocals. The most recent version on the Turtle Dove CD features Lansing favorites Pat Madden and Sally Potter.
Excellent! This song should absolutely be adopted by our State Government as our State Song! Barb Barton's voice is awesome, and her passion for protecting this state, as an endangered species and environmental biologist, is sincere. This performance at the Turtle Dove concert was unforgettable! Ronda Liskey
