It's an old myth with zero historical backing, one that is oft repeated and yet no one can find a single source, anywhere, save one letter where one officer makes the suggestion (he was a low level lieutenant) but was rebuffed, largely as the English feared the disease as much as anyone, and also because the disease had infected the Indians merely from common contatc with the English, making the plain foolish and pointless. It's a myth, simple as that.

This is pretty hilarious (even though the "smallpox blanket" thing is an absolute myth, and was merely a suggestion, never implemented, by a single English officer in the 1700's)
