A rare titan arum (Amorphophallus titanum) plant, also commonly known as "corpse flower," recently flowered in the butterfly vivarium of the Milwaukee Public Museum. The slow blooming process began at approximately 3:30pm on Friday, January 15, 2010.

  • Would the butterflies pollinate it?

  • Butterflies are not attracted to the flower, so therefore they would not be expected to carry pollen from one plant to another. There are no rewards for the insects (nectar), only the smell of decaying flesh to attract sweat flies and carrion beetles.
