the vacuum cleaner reminds them of the sounds that they hear in the uterus called "white noise". a vacuum cleaner or hair dryer or very helpful with infants, especially newborns. one of the reason a baby has trouble adjusting to their new environment is because they are expected to sleep in complete silence when noise akin to that of a vacuum cleaner is much more soothing.

We got an mp3 sound from Soundsleepstudio. com and it works even better than the real thing and you can turn down the volume!
