In a game that pitted two contrasting styles against one another, the Gauchos' fast-paced offensive attack prevailed in a win over the Trojans.
El Cerrito (2-0) was led offensively by running back Marshon Ardoin, who rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. The junior running back broke two runs of 38 yards, and was a constant threat for the Gauchos' offense with his speed on the outside.
Petaluma's methodical offense, highlighted primarily by deception and inside handoffs to running backs Damien Silver and Spencer Cervantes, was successful in the first half as it advanced inside El Cerrito's 20-yard line twice.
But a fumble and a failed fourth-down conversion put an end to any scoring hopes for the Trojans early.
In the second half, El Cerrito's defensive unit shut down Petaluma's running game. By forcing Petaluma to pass, it led to two second-half interceptions for quarterback Eric Hunsicker.
"Our defense's ability to adjust to their grind-it-out attack was key tonight," El Cerrito coach Kenny Kahn said. "A constant criticism of Gaucho football is our inability to stop the inside run. We made it a point to stuff the middle and force them to the outside or throw it."
Senior wide receiver and defensive back Patrick Mooney also had a great game on both sides of the ball, scoring on a 43-yard touchdown pass and reeling in an interception off Hunsicker.
