The purpose of these rm -rf videos on youtube is just to document what it actually looks like. Noone does this as part of a reinstall procedure. It's a waste of time ;)

yep, thats because OS X and Linux both are based off UNIX.

2. Type ~./Trash
3. Hit Enter
4. Type sudo rm -rf
5. Press space then drag the file you want to permanently delete into Terminal
6. Press Enter
Your file has been permanently deleted.

i cant understund it! it SO? eazy to distroy it? then every program can distroy your system, and it does not need have root pas or be a virus!

dont know about OS X but today some distros only give you:
rm: cannot remove root directory '/'
including signed in as root :/

on Linux does it get as far as to wipe the harddrive?

Yes. It also goes deleted everything in Mac OS 10.4.
