Marketing expert Clara Shih explains how marketers utilize Facebook to target advertising. She demonstrates how to target ads to a specific demographic based on age, gender, religion, or any other information included on a user's profile.

-----

The Facebook Era is a newly released book about how social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter are ushering in a new era of business, relationships, and culture. Additionally, it discusses what companies need to do strategically and tactically to adapt and thrive in this new environment.

Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn are changing everything we thought we knew about sales, marketing, and product development -- and empowering companies with new tools, insights, and ability to transform customers into true partners and your most effective sales force yet. - Association for Computing Machinery

Clara Shih is an author, blogger, and entrepreneur who created Faceconnector, the first business application on Facebook. Clara recently left her position as Director of Social Networking Alliances at salesforce.com. She is now CEO of CrowdContext, a provider of social media tools which enable brand marketers to manage and measure social media campaigns across Facebook, Twitter, and their own websites.

Clara's book, The Facebook Era (Prentice Hall 2009), about using Facebook and Twitter for business, has been featured in The New York Times, Chicago Sun-Times, Industry Standard, CRM Magazine, and others. Clara is a frequently invited speaker on social media at global conferences including Web 2.0 Expo, Enterprise 2.0, Toronto TechWeek, and Social Ad Summit.

She blogs at http://thefacebookera.com and Twitters as clarashih.

  • I will never get the shamelessness of marketingspeak.

Ads are constant brainrape, I don't get how nobody revolts against this absurd madness... even my bus is a driving billboard these days.

Fuck all people that contribute to the uglyness of a marketingobsessed world!

  • You know that scene in Minority Report where Tom Cruise goes past a screen and does a personalised advert at him, due to the eyeball recognition? Marketing people watch that scene and have an orgasm. Normal people watch with disgust.

  • Bill Hicks said it best - "If you work in advertising go home and kill yourself, seriously, kill yourself."

  • @sorenmarkable yeah i guess it wouldn't be so bad if google and facebook were really the only ones using the data.. but its really inevitable that its going to be stolen by other people someday. and eventually the government will probaby have open access to such information, and it will be widely accepted as if it were a tax report of something. its just another way that we'll be controlled.. but oh well whatever lol

-also this is a bit random but i'm about to read 1984 by george orwell lol

  • @flare765 -continued-

the more pricise picture google/gmail/facebook got of you the "better" targetted adds ..

As Clara say in the vid, it removes the annoying "spam-"adds (those that have no interest for us) .. like a big brother "safeguarding" us...

On the other hand .. what if N S A have told google : We want free access to your "data" ...

That would make me a ethicalbit uncomfortable .. even that I don't live in the US .. or actually because I don't live there ;-)

  • @flare765 hehe ...

.. in your gmail .. the button "search" -> in your mail also give a pretty precise picture of what goes on in your mind uhm mail or ...

-and even without violating the "privacy" your path on the web and in your mail is tracked ..

I'm sure their "privacy stament" is only regarding your personal info .. and they really don't even need that ... they need the big picture to sell adds ... not your personal info ..

  • @sorenmarkable when they forced me theyre exact words (i saved them cuz i though they were hillarious at the time) were: You will no longer be able to sign in to YouTube without a Google Account.

If you do not want to link this YouTube account, you can sign out here.

and i just felt violated at that point.. needless to say, i now have a shiny new gmail account..

  • @sorenmarkable now it makes sense dammit!! i knew there was something weird when youtube kept giving me shit about not connecting.. every time they asked me (whenever i logged on) i would just say, ask me later. ask me later.. then one day they just forced me to lol. <-- continued in another coment lmao

  • @flare765

That's why they are so "happy" about getting you to "connect" your accounts .. so google know what you watch on youtube so they can tell facebook ^^

It's all about collecting data on you to show adds ...

  • lol it always pisses me off when facebook, 'somehow' knows what i've been searchning.. try searching a bullshit term you normally wouldn't search, and then look at those ads that show up on facebook. you'll notice that they are related to the bullshit term you chose.. this happens with your normal browser as well

  • @jalgjalg calm down fucker

  • @Yamakashi1

"Iam perlucente ruina" is a Latin phrase and it more or less means "the ruin is already shining through; the coming destruction is already perceptible for those who want to see it..."
