In the course of gathering material for his upcoming documentary on Abu Ghraib, Academy Award-winning director Errol Morris conducted over 200 hours of interviews with key figures. Col. Janis Karpinski, at the time of Abu Ghraib a Brigadeier General, was the commander of the prison and later in charge of Saddam Hussein once he was captured. Of course, the vast majority of material can't make the cut and this scene, while compelling, wasn't in the film when Errol Morris presented it at the 2007 New Yorker Festival.

Full-length interview with Errol Morris and Philip Gourevitch, which this clip is excerpted from: http://www.newyorker.com/online/video/festival/2007/MorrisGourevitch

  • Abu Ghraib, Gitmo and the Bush administrations policy of torture is, by far, THE biggest moral outrage ever, EVER, committed in United States history. Addington, Yoo, Bybee, Gonzalez, Rumsfeld, Cheney, Bush, MUST all be tried as war criminals. As Ashcroft commented: "History will not judge this kindly." History is now. Imprison these scumbags.

  • Col. Janis Karpinski was used as a scapegoat by Bush and others to hide what the CIA and civilian interrogators were doing in Abu Ghraib. You must watch this documentary to understand how it came to be that this honorable woman paid such a high price for trying to do an impossible job. In the end, the bad guys won, this country lost, and a competent soldier and leader such as Col Karpinski lost. That's not a good thing for this country. We need a true and thorough investigation.

  • @MaryD481 Janice said that she had orders from her superior about torture procedures and events and she did it because of orders. Well the Nazis at Nuremberg had orders too from their superior for torture and used the exact same defence that Janice has used.

Now I understand why the superior firepower American troops are being pushed back by inferior numbered Mujahideen forces in Afghanistan.

Its because we Americans have terribly stupid women leaders in their military like Janice.

  • was it really him? gov. did this to see how much the american ppl. would stand for, we allowed it all to happen. now it has come home to us. this is nothing new ppl. have known this throughout time. however not this time as most americans have been replaced w/third world ppl. who are too afraid to stand for freedom.
