If anyone lives in Dominican Republic, ask around, I'm sure people are fond of him. Jesus Rodriguez and they called him Mamajuana a lot, I have a photo of my grandfather here with Tatico and the mamajuana they used to make. A lot of people were looking for him in but he already moved to New York. Check Wikipedia, it will not say who invented it. That's because they haven't found him yet. I know it's been a long time, but I'm hoping someone here can give me more information before he dies.

i can't speak spanish well so i'm sorry, if someone can translate this comment that would be great. my grandfather, jesus rodriguez has a history with these people and i'm wondering if anyone here knows tatico or the band he performed with? my grandfather used to play with them back in dominican republic in the 1960's & 1970's before tatico died. my grandfather is also responsible for inventing mamajuana, it was his nickname growing up there. so if anyone remembers him please let me know.

. Cumbia started in the northern coast of South America, what is now Colombia and Panama, mainly in or around Cartagena during the period of Spanish colonization. Spain used its ports to import African slaves, who tried to preserve their musical traditions and also turned the drumming and dances into a courtship ritual. Cumbia was mainly performed with just drums and claves.
this sounds way to new and the voice is different for it to be tatico

Yo pienso que CUMBIA fue un genero de musica COLOMBIANA ?
This does not sound that much like traditional cumbia.
Although there is a Cuban connection to cumbia !

@chsn09 yea it is but tatico is the king of merengue tipico and one of the best accordionists ever from DR and he recorded this beat around the 50's or 60's
