In July of 2009 New Zealanders will be asked to vote in a national referendum on "Should a smack as part of good parental correction be a criminal offence in New Zealand?"
A YES VOTE in this referendums defends the equal rights of children against assault.
This referendum is intended to overturn the amendment to section 59 of the crimes act which removed the defence of reasonable force when disciplining a child.
7 people who assaulted their children were able to escape prosecution using "reasonable force" as a defence.
A Yes Vote supports the amendment which was passed by 113 out of 121 MPs in 2007.
A Yes Vote is supported by Plunket, Barnardos, Save the Children, Unicef and 70 other reputable NGOs.
