This quick flick was inspired by a conference session I helped plan,
"We B(e)lo(n)g: Womyn of Color and Online Feminism."

During the session, journalists, writers, activists, bloggers, and artists participated in envisioning a just world for womyn of color.

  • @WurvnHugglez womyn or wymym is not a creative derivative of women.

  • "engendered linguistics"? lol of course there's going to be a different word for women then there is man, that's how you identify people; Is it racist to say someone is black or white? It just seems a bit pointless making an issue where there shouldn't be one about the spelling of a word when there's far more important things like women's rights in third world countries that these feminists could be focussing on.

  • No. What I'm saying is that some activists, writers, thinkers, and feminists who are familiar with the often manipulative and narrowing use of engendered linguistics show their dissent from socialized stereotypes, not from being human.

Regardless of the origin of the words, its contemporary meaning is commonly used to label, categorize and identify. For most, there's no issue, but for others, it's much more complex.

  • I don't understand....The "man" in the word woman comes from the word mannaz meaning human and the old english words for man and woman were wæpman and wifman. So are you saying people don't want to conform to being human when they change the spelling to womyn?

  • Alternative spellings of the traditionally spelled word, "woman" or "women" can be a sign of dissent or a non-conforming linguist tool to challenge traditional gender/sex roles and stereotypes.

Let's not bash about grammar, please. At least, not until you've proofread your own comment for correct spelling and punctuation.

  • lol, now you're spelling it even more wrongly than before. You should use a dictionary.

  • it's been a year since i made that comment, and since then i've learnt to spell that noun as 'wymyn'.

thank you for attempting to correct me, but in the meantime i've already moved forward on my own.

  • you spelt women wrong.

  • it's good to see womyn united, keep it up
