Lovely video. Fantastic music.

Moths are faster than 18ft skiffs, they are rubbing on the 30 knot barrier, and they can sail a higher vmg upwind! hence their yardstick handicap is lower

Do you know the name of the tune? Is it something that he wrote? Thanks, J.

this is my favorite vid on youtube.......I used to sail Lasers in Highschool, now I'm building a foiler. (lasers are so slow now)
-
Dunno the top speed but ive known them to do 25 knots and that in sailing terms is phenominal second only to the 18 foot skiff and to be honest 18 foot skiff require bigger balls to sail ^_^

I can do rolltacks on moth?

whats the maximum speed (in knots) ?

I don't know the max speed, however it is not any magic speed number that they are chasing as speed is largely dependent on the wind strength.
Rather it is just so obvious how fast they are going compared to other boats that are sailing around on the bay.

Music is from Chris Duncan dot net, brilliant fiddler specializing in scottish folk / dance music. Based in Australia but travels as required. A real nice guy. This recording was taken some years ago, he is even better now.

I like the speed, but what if the hydrofoil blade hits floating bamboo - will these break? These bamboo peril are usually around after typhoons, the bamboo comes from destroyed fishpens. On a hobie 16, the bamboo flips up the rudder so we try to avoid running over them when possible.

Ah, trouble is word that jumps to mind. Foilers are not designed to "hit" anything and if they do, expect to disintegrate the foils or split the hull in half, either way, a not very good solution.
Boats that "save themselves" in these situations sound like an excellant idea. Or did you mean that you try to avoid running over hobies ? :)
