What is South Arabia and Why its not South Yemen ??

Federation of South Arabia, 1963-67, Arabian peninsula, formed by the merger of the British colony of Aden with the Federation of the Emirates of the South, a British protectorate.

At the beginning of 1959, it was formerly a federation within the Commonwealth, with a total area of about 155,400 sq km/60,000 sq mi and a population of about 750,000. The federation promoted coordination of resources, education, medical services, defense, and communications between the constituent states, and was normally governed by a Federal Council of 94 members. Executive powers were vested in a Supreme Council of Ministers. The nucleus of the federation, calling itself the Federation of Arab Emirates of the South, was formed by the six states of Baihan, Dhala, Abdhali, Fadhli, Lower Yafa, and Upper Aulaqi. In succeeding years more states joined, making 14 in all. In Jan., 1963, the Aden colony joined the federation, which was then renamed the Federation of South Arabia.

The British-sponsored federation met with considerable opposition from the nationalists and those who have northern assets. Two rival nationalist groups emerged in the aftermath of the federation—the National Liberation Front (NLF) and the Front for the Liberation of Occupied South Yemen (FLOSY). By late 1967 the NLF had become the dominant group and forced the collapse of the federal government. British forces were withdrawn in Nov., 1967, and Aden and South Arabia became the independent state and renamed, by a pressure of northern lobby, South Yemen. The northern lobby continued pressure on the southern political leadership until South Yemen and (northern) Yemen got united in 1990.
