Based on what little I know of feline vocalisations and behaviour, the calls emitted by both felines(?) were anxious warning calls, and the sniffing and rubbing behaviours by your cat were its attempts to reassure itself. Nothing hideous nor frightening, just an anxious kitty wondering what was happening and trying to reassure itself that all was well in its home.
