Hey, Shugden is practised worldwide. Tibet, Nepal, India, Mongolia, and many other countries. Definitely there will be four million people - and it is increasing in western countries where people have relative freedom from Dalai Lama persecution.
Beofre DL banned it Shugden was a major practise for most, if not all, Gelupas. anyhow many have signed the ban but are still practising secretly. In Chinese held Tibet I hear that it is very popular.
Without the slightest doubt in the world Tibetan society now has official religious apartheid...thank you for bringing this up. You mention academic research. Of this there is plent to prove apartheid - see Ursula Bernis' research for example. Also at WSS site you will find a massive list of evidence as good as (probably better than) any academic research.
BTW there is nothing more true than the DL's bodyguards being so disappointed in him - these were the guys prepared to die for him.
As I said "I prefer in-depth academic researches and not reports from hectic TV, radio or newspaper journalists always under time pressure and happy for a controversial story." I do not belief that both TV teams t "deliberately planned and rehearsed". They show some perspectives and some they don't show. If some shop owners make privately notices at their shop that Shugdenpas should not enter, this I do not respect at all. But this does not mean that there is Apartheid in Tibetan society.
I refer indepth academic researches and not reports from hectic TV, radio or newspaper journalists always under time pressure and happy for a controversial story.
I think, both TVs took up too much Shugdenpa's propaganda. France24 TV's claim of "4 Million Tibetan" would "practice this religion", is plain wrong. From six Million Tibetans maybe 300.000 (???) or less may practice it. Shugden is only common in one of five major schools in Tibet, in the Gelug school, and there it is a minority practising Shugden worship. Moreover Shugden is no religion.

Personally I prefer the French TV team and Swiss TV team's reports over the TGIE propaganda.
You think France24 film is "spin"?!
See how those monks are bullied and pushed around just because of their religious belief.
Is that film and exaggeration? Was it deliberately planned and rehearsed? I do not think so.
