My friend found a bunch of old Model A's in a school - was very disappointing to see every single one we tried smoking and dying after a couple of seconds of being turned on. Seemed to be some cap or something in the power supply, probably easy enough to sort out...

I think these PSUs smoke due to the '2X' capacitor drying out or aging. They are across the mains to absorb any spikes. The model As might be linear power supples and easy to fix. I'm having a shuffle through my old electric stuff for caps I striped out other PSUs.
