Wikimedia UK is working closely with Derby Museum & Art Gallery, and is trialling the use of QR codes that direct visitors to more information on Wikipedia's website.
Here we see a new development: one QR code recognising the language each phone is set to. Providing there is a Wikipedia page in that language, the user is sent there.
Here we see two phones using one QR code next to the mineral, amethyst, to arrive at different pages. One in French; one in English. How cool is that?
This demo was hastily filmed in advance of a GLAM-Wiki meet up on 9th April 2011. Despite its low resolution, we felt it well-worth sharing. We plan to re-shoot it with a proper video camera later!
Cool idea! Any feedback from visitors?
At Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford we have fascinating objects crammed into cases, but little room for labels / interpretation. This could be what we're looking for, either linking to wikipedia or or own generated content. I like the multi-lingual aspect though. A colleague here apparently flirted with the idea of QR codes a few years ago but abandoned it as it was thought smartphones would never catch on as a mass-use gadget. Hmm...! Cheers for posting.
